Stop the Sewage Campaign

About

The top priority campaign for Tennessee Riverkeeper is to systematically investigate sewage from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in the Tennessee River basin. We are aware that there are many significant sewage problems in the watershed, especially the section that flows through Alabama.

Strategy

Tennessee Riverkeeper has developed a database of all Clean Water Act permits in the watershed. The staff and volunteers periodically review all permits help by polluters, including their pollution discharge reports, enforcement actions, and/or inspections by the state or the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The Riverkeeper and its legal team then develops a plan of addressing problem dischargers. If litigation is required, then we develop and implement an enforcement strategy.

About Us

Clean water, stronger communities. Tennessee Riverkeeper monitors polluters and their pollution permits, responds to citizen complaints, and utilizes other methods to further protect the Tennessee and Cumberland Rivers and their tributaries. When we discover illegal pollution we seek compliance with and enforcement of environmental laws.
